So Taylor Swifts new single, Out of the Woods, is simply brilliant. And this is coming from someone who generally despises pop music, or anything that sounds manufactured rather than created, or anything that emphasizes visual or sonic aesthetic versus heart and soul. I just like it, and thats that. Ive neglected to post a link to the song at this time as it is easy enough to find and certainly doesnt require any additional promotion. But I would like bring to light a silly little thought that keeps running through my mind, and theres a 100% chance anyone who is still reading this (all 2 of you) will either 1) have no idea what Im talking about, or 2) totally disagree. And that is this -- It sounds just like a synthpop Jimmy Eat World song. If you know who that is, youll most likely just remember their 2001 hit The Middle (one of the greatest songs ever written). I, however, own 70 tracks of theirs across 6 full albums and consider them one of my all-time favorite bands. I think its primarily the verses rather than the more pop-oriented chorus of Out of the Woods that is so reminiscent of Jimmy Eat World, although I might just be crazy for even thinking there could be any sort of connection. Or am I? The writer of the music of Out of the Woods, Jack Antonoff, has been a key member of the bands Steel Train, Fun. and Bleachers, all of which were definitely influenced by Jimmy Eat World. So youre telling me theres a chance... Im certainly not accusing anyone of copycatting, and this probably doesnt even qualify has any type of homage. More just a passing coincidence that no one else noticed. I think my conclusion is that there are simply only so many melodies to be shared and only so many genres to share them. I have up to this point not purchased a Taylor Swift song, nor do I intend to, regardless of their brilliance. Why? I already have 7,139 other songs I love just as much awaiting their rediscovery.
