So Violet wants to be Elsa for Halloween, and, I hate all that - TopicsExpress

So Violet wants to be Elsa for Halloween, and, I hate all that princess garbage, to begin with, but now she wants to dye her hair blonde so she can look more like Elsa. And it makes me so sad, that its already starting. That at the age of four, shes already catching on to all the signs around her that tell her that shes not good enough, and that she has to change; That she will be valuable to the world only if she is sweet and pretty, and not because of the remarkable things she says or does. That she will, for the rest of her life, be surrounded by ads for anti-aging serums, and weight loss products, covers of people magazine telling her how this girl or that lost that last ten pounds, or demonizing her if she didnt. She will be surrounded by the messages, that, at every turn, work to keep the women in this country feeling like they are not good enough, that keep them from pursuing loftier endeavors, because they are too busy being eaten up with the trivial pursuit of chasing an unattainable standard of beauty. Messages that make up so much of the backdrop of our lives, yet we hardly even notice them. But they are all around us. Whether we notice them or not, every princess chasing her prince, every Victorias secret model, every barbie doll, every tarted up cartoon character sends our girls a message about their worth. As a parent, and a woman, its quite a force to reckon with. I see it happening already, and it just makes me sad. And angry.
