So a FB friend of mine likes a posting where the author expresses his beliefs that Bruce Springsteen is a jackwad while posting a link to an article that he obviously didnt even take the time to read beyond skimming it superficially. If he had taken the time to actually read it, he would have come across this - By offering a critique of our nation’s policies, they celebrate its promise. Or, as Mark Twain put it: “The true patriotism, the only rational patriotism, is loyalty to the Nation all the time, loyalty to the Government when it deserves it.” Thats the thing about conservative outrage. It requires no critical thinking. It only requires outrage...when you are told by one of the boxes in your house that you should be outraged. It doesnt require nuance or analysis. It fits perfectly on a bumper sticker. It doesnt require compassion for the mess that is human existence. It requires strict adherence to ideology. Fortunate Son isnt even that difficult of a song to glean its meaning. If a 20 year old John Fogerty in 1965 was inspired to write a song that today so confounds, so escapes, the reasoning ability of half of the Country today, were in deep sh%t.
