After her father was paralyzed from a car accident, dancer Merry Lynn Morris envisioned a wheelchair that moved with the users body. Anybody in any body should have the right to dance, Morris said. Students mounted a seat to a Segway. They worked with a power chair, reorienting the joystick. Pressure changes on the seat caused movement similar to a Segway. It needed more intricate controls—something that could be strapped to the head or chest, and programmed to read subtle movements. Something a caretaker could also use in place of pushing. A remote control. Enter the smartphone, with its ability to respond to movement. It was the perfect option for this supercharged century, when were all really just bodies interacting with devices. She envisions the dance chair to move like a robotic vacuum cleaner.
