So...a deep thought. I was listening to a drive-time radio show on the way home today, and I heard the DJ say, Life is a terminal condition. Im not at all detracting from the horrific tragedy of a life ended too early due to cancer, ALS, or some other debilitating condition. But yet, I saw so much value in his point. How many of us live like it could all end at any moment (because it could)? How many of us TRULY treasure the moments spent with our kids, our spouses, family, or friends...as though we wouldnt be here next month? Do we prioritize a vacation spent with loved ones, or once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list-worthy experiences...or do we focus on the minutiae of the daily grind? One fact of life is that life IS a terminal condition. Rarely do we know when that moment will come, but it will come for us all. This really hit home for me in Hawaii. Im in this beautiful, almost magical place, and it hit me...this was the one thing my mom so badly wanted to do before she passed away 19 years ago at the age of 40. I was having this experience for both of us. I cherished every minute, and was so grateful to have Matt there, willing to go out and do whatever the hell I picked. THAT is living life. I saw things Id only ever read about...as minor as a rainforest, as powerful as a volcano. As my own 40th approaches in the next few years, and I reconcile with the knowledge that (God willing) I will outlive my parents (who both died at 40)...I realize that I want to LIVE! I want to get out there and spend more than maybe I should sometimes, go places I have only ever dreamed of seeing, and to do everything I can while I am able to enjoy it. It should not be a bucket list. It should be a life list. I want to live as though I were dying -- we all are, from the moment we are born. It is with that mindset that we can learn to appreciate what we have and truly enjoy LIFE.
