So, a lot of people are getting excited for Star Wars: Episode VII, and Im certainly no exception (as anyone who knows me can attest). Much of this excitement is attributed to the fact that JJ Abrams has promised to focus on using practical effects. Cool! However, I want to shed light on a common misconception among many people that the Star Wars Prequels were all CGI. They werent. In fact, the total number of miniatures, models, and prosthetics/animatronics built for The Phantom Menace alone exceeded what was built for the entire original trilogy COMBINED. As much as people like to harp on George Lucas for his reliance on technology, he NEVER abandoned the old methods. He just utilized the new tools he had at his disposal as much as the old. I guarantee JJ Abrams will be doing the same thing.
