So a new character has been revealed for smash, and as usual I’m - TopicsExpress

So a new character has been revealed for smash, and as usual I’m over-analyzing and speculating after seeing the trailer. I wrote my thoughts on the reveal and I thought Id share it with the group. Im curious to see if people agree with me or thought differently of the trailer. Seeing Robin using spells is pretty cool considering that magic is an important part of Fire Emblem’s gameplay and it’s finally being acknowledged in Smash Brothers. Anyways, it’s told to us that the tome Robin is holding is the source of the magic spells he’s using and they seem to be important to his play-style. He then says that it has limited use, and that he has his sword to make up for it. Important to note is that in the trailer Robin’s sword swipes seemed to be significantly slower than Marth’s and his sword is much shorter. I predict that Robin’s gameplay will benefit from the advantage of his sword, but he won’t rely on it. More importantly, when Robin’s tome is used up, he drops it in with the exact sound effect and animation as a normal item, suggesting that it is an item that he can summon in battle not unlike Link’s bombs or Diddy Kong’s bananas. This…changes…everything. If Robin’s tome has the effect of a normal item, then that changes a lot about how Robin works. Assuming that Robin’s tome has the same properties as most items in the game, which is likely, then the equipped tome will most likely change Robin’s normal (A button) moves such as his aerials, his jab, his tilts, and his smash attacks. Robin’s earlier comment that I mentioned leads me to assume that when Robin does not have a tome, these attacks will be replaced by swipes with his sword. Also, if Robin’s tome has the properties of a normal item, it means his specials will be unchanged when the tome is equipped, so his specials will most likely involve the sword also. Also, if Robin’s tome acts as a normal item, what will happen if he tosses the tome and is caught by another character? It’s safe to assume nothing too drastic will happen like them being able to do all his spells, but will it do anything special at all? Now, if the item is programmed differently from all the other items and instead changes his special attacks (b moves) then that’s also strange. It means that Robin’s recovery might be significantly better with one tome than another, or even with no tomes equipped at all. I also wonder If the tomes summoned are randomized or if there’s some way to choose them. In either case, Robin’s attacks are items are clearly programmed in an entirely different way than all the other characters and items and I’m impressed that they put in the work so they could create another unique character. I think Robin’s matchups are going to be extremely dynamic. Different tomes will affect the matchup greatly, and Robin players will need to learn which ones are more advantageous against each character and situation. In addition, when Robin’s tome is unequipped, he’s suddenly forced to commit to a close-ranged battle. Lastly, since Robin’s tomes are items, it means that having one equipped gives him the disadvantage of not being able to grab his opponents, which to me is his biggest weakness.
