So after I shared a certain famous so-called DJs award picture yesterday, I couldnt help but notice the amount of hate and disdain people have worldwide towards the state of affairs of todays dance scene. Its obvious that weve lost something precious along the way on a much bigger scale than ever before. Sure, weve always had the fakes, people playing pre-mixed/recorded sets, people doing live PAs without any equipment plugged in, and weve had plenty of DJs with their names on records who didnt know squat about making music (yes the ghost writing issues.) But for the most part, we knew and appreciated real talented DJs, and there were very few getting booked that genuinely sucked. Today, every time you turn around theres another half dressed DJ slag with a million facebook likes and even more fake performances at these big festivals. Yes, something very precious has been lost, which is the respect for the true art of DJing. And anyone who truly knows whats up knows its not as easy to master as you think. It took us years to perfect our craft, to tune our ears, fingers and hands to mix and blend smoothly, piece together the best songs seamlessly, and to cut and scratch with precision. Now of course not every DJ is a turntablist, some are just masters of the mix, with uniquely creative blending or track editing, the ability to read and rock any crowd, play 2-3-4 or more tracks at once, fully utilize mixer, CDJ or software effects - and the list goes on and the ways we express ourselves through music are endless. But the bottom line is that we need to get that back somehow, or at least the talent of tomorrow needs to remember there was a time when we didnt worship false idols and we should strive to be good, not just popular. Me? I feel I had my heyday and I was lucky to be around and appreciated when we still gave a shit about true talent. The future is yet to be determined though....Id like to keep the faith that all hope isnt lost. In the meantime, heres half of the top 100 female DJ list that Shejay released in 2006. Youll notice these chicks, while all beautiful, were not there because of looks or fakery, they genuinely rocked. I was one of those humbled lucky ones to be on that list, and I hope to live to see a day where DJ lists look like this again, and awards are given to people who truly deserve it. lorisdjservice/pdf/top100.pdf P.S. If anyone has the full Shejay list somewhere let me know, I have a few deserving friends on there that Id love to be included in this.:)
