So...after church today I went to WalMart. In the check out line I got to talking with the two couples in front of me - one in their late 30s the other late 50s. We didnt know each other but it turned out we had all moved here from Southern California! Id been here the longest (16 total years) and the others had been here 6 and 9 years respectively. The consensus was unanimous: we all miss So Cal! Cliche or not, there really is no place like home and this place hasnt ever felt even remotely like home to me. They talk about southern hospitality but Ive got to tell you that So Cal is MUCH more friendly than the south - especially to outsiders - youre accepted there on day 1 - thats how we roll. Here, if your family isnt from the south (southeast - I am technically from the south as noted in previous posts) you are an outsider. When we moved back to California in 2002 the people on the street we were moving to all came out to greet us! None of them knew us previously. They helped unload the moving van and one guy even installed our dishwasher for us - just helping - didnt ask for a penny! Wed never seen any of those people before in our life. Before that day was over we had 3 invitations to peoples homes! Ive lived on the street I live on in North Carolina now for more than 9 years. Only 2 of the neighbors (there are 183 houses in this subdivision) have ever introduced themselves and Ive never been invited to anyones home. Ive even heard stuff like Yer not frum round hir, er ya boy? - no joke - that happened when we lived further out in the country. There hasnt been a day since I first set foot here 16+ years ago when I didnt think about home. Dorothy was right! Well, resolution time is just around the corner...I know what mine is!
