So, among gun advocates and hunter friends, there has been this question of shooting a bear in self defense, or in the defense of another person. Its very politically incorrect to even speak about shooting a bear, let alone doing it, but the truth of the matter is, there have been 5 deaths THIS YEAR from bear attacks in the U.S. So heres the deal. It IS legal to shoot a bear in self defense: USC: Title 16, 1540: Notwithstanding any other provision of this chapter, it shall be a defense to prosecution under this subsection if the defendant committed the offense based on a good faith belief that he was acting to protect himself or herself, a member of his or her family, or any other individual, from bodily harm from any endangered or threatened species.
