So anti-Obama filmmaker Dinesh DSouza pleads guilty to making - TopicsExpress

So anti-Obama filmmaker Dinesh DSouza pleads guilty to making illegal campaign contributions. The real crime here, though, is the government deciding how much free speech Americans can exercise. DSouza, the widely recognized conservative who made 2016: Obamas America, the 2012 documentary that took an unfavorable look at the president, has cut a deal with prosecutors, admitting to one count of making an illegal political donation. He would have gone to trial this week had he not agreed to the plea. DSouza was indicted in January on charges that he had asked friends to donate to a Republican House candidates campaign with the promise that he would later reimburse them for their contributions. Clearly, such an effort is an attempt to skirt federal law that allows an individual to give no more than $2,600 to a candidate per election cycle. Why should contributing more than that be a crime? After all, no ones life, liberty or property is violated in the giving of money to office seekers. And why $2,600? How was it determined that political corruption begins at the $2,601 mark? As columnist George Will says, most political spending finances the dissemination of speech. Donation limits, therefore, effectively violate free speech. Theres no way to reasonably and compellingly argue otherwise. news.investors/ibd-editorials/052014-701624-dsouza-pleads-guilty-to-making-illegal-campaign-finance-donations.htm
