So cool. This is Uranium Alpha decay in a cloud chamber. Alpha particles are a form of radiation that has two protons and two neutrons, so basically a Helium atom without any electrons, which Im assuming gives it a very positive charge and it will steal electrons form its environment and become regular old Helium. Did you all know the term radiation actually means a few different things? Theres Alpha which is helium nucleuss, Beta which is high speed electrons or positrons, and Gamma which is extremely high frequency radio waves. . I think most people are imagining Gamma radiation when they hear the term radiation. Just an assumption though. Also did you know that even though they are called micro wave ovens, the electromagnetic radiation given off is actually a relatively low frequency and is such a low energy it is non-ionizing.. meaning it CANT give you cancer? itll burn you, sure... but it wont cause cancer. Thats totally a myth. Also, since microwave radiation is electromagnetic, AKA light, nothing is left in your food. There are no radioactive particles in a microwave oven.. period. Food can only be contaminated and become radioactive if ACTUAL radioactive material, such as uranium, are physically mixed into your food. Your microwave does nothing of the sort.
