So, driving home tonight after the cabaret, I turn on the radio - - TopicsExpress

So, driving home tonight after the cabaret, I turn on the radio - 2 chords into Act II scene 2 of Traviata. I say 2 chords, because I was immediately riveted by those 2 chords! As I listened, there was something so clear, so sonorous, so balanced in the orchestra, in the way the singers & the complete ensemble were connected within the texture, that I felt like I was hearing this music for the first time. I got to thinking about another time I felt this upon hearing a very familiar piece - when I was lucky enough to be in on Carlos Kleibers rehearsals @ the Met of Zeffirellis Boheme - w/ Luciano & Scotti. I remember thinking how can this music that I know so well sound so fresh, so renewed, proportionally so pristine? So, back to tonight, hearing this brilliant Traviata, I realize, hey, thats Cortrubas!Thats Domingo! This must be the recording of Traviata I wire out all those years ago - my all time favorite recording of the opera - & whos conducting? - Carlos Kleiber! Something about the way he inhabits a piece really speaks to me. I feel enlightened.
