So far, going to the Philippines has been interesting... The day Im supposed to fly to Manila (via Japan), Japan is getting hit with the edge of a typhoon. So I end up switching airlines to fly through Beijing and race to the airport to make the new (earlier than my original time) flight. Connect in Beijing, and on the flight to Manila someone decides to smoke in the bathroom and then flush their cigarette. Every time anyone flushes the toilet, the whole plane fills with smoke, over and over. I could hear the flight attendants whispering that they were worried that it was still burning inside. It was a long stressful 4 hours in a cabin full of smoke... extra painful with my asthma. My first week in Manila, 2 commuter rail accidents occur along the path of my commute including one where the train crashes through a wall, showering pedestrians with cement. Fortunately, I dont take the train itself, but I take a car that travels alongside the elevated train. I have pictures of the debris. My first week in Manila, the Mayon volcano starts rumbling and smoking. Last week I mention that I might take a tour to Taal volcano which is only a couple hours outside of Manila. 2 days ago, that starts rumbling and now there is a warning to stay away from its crater too. I really wondered if I should risk getting on the ferry to go to Corregidor last weekend... theres been enough stories about ferry accidents. I did take the risk and fortunately that trip went smoothly. Just a few more days and I get to head home. Fortunately, the Iceland volcano is not in my path.
