So, for all the enquiring minds out there, there is no big scandal at City Hall! The crowds in council chambers (OK, they weren’t exactly crowds, but there were a lot of people in attendance for a change!) were all there for different reasons. There were some there to support a citizen presentation and petition to protest the illuminated sign at Mountain Road and Bromley, there was a large contingent from the Canadian Track and Field Championships (June 27-29), a few people supporting the United Way (including a few City of Moncton union representatives), there were a few people there for the presentation of the City’s Emergency Measures Plan (in addition to the Fire Chief, the Regional EMO coordinator and a representative of Red Cross, there was a couple there who spent 3 ½ months in High River, Alberta after the flood and they have filled an huge tractor trailer here with emergency supplies to help clean up after a disaster) and finally, Mike Sullivan, a former City of Moncton employee is teaching governance at the Tantramar Seniors College and he had most of his class there to observe a council meeting! I can’t say that it was the most exciting meeting ever, that’s for sure, but they stayed the entire time (over 4 hours). Additionally, there were a few random citizens who were just observing…perhaps thinking of running in an upcoming by-election? Anyway, we spent $8 million+ on road/sewer repair and paint, decided to postpone the construction of the Fairview Knoll Park, demolish the Upland School (and build a park in its place), buy some new parking meters, construct Rabbit Brook Trail (phase 1) and buy a truck. Time for bed…I’ve got a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast at 7:30 tomorrow morning at the Casino.
