So here is the Old Wolcott circa 1963, they put in the other fire escapes in 65. Notice the bike rack, nothing was ever locked up. Remember the cloak rooms with the cubby holes? You had about as much privacy to your belongings as any public library. Yet seldom did anything ever turn up stolen. On the off occasion that it did, within a few hours the perpetrators were found. You couldnt hide anything in a small town, for very long. Almost always the stolen goods were returned, and the thieves outed and had to endure town shame until we forgot about it or something else turned up missing. Our neighbors never knocked, they just came in, our doors were never locked, unless we left home for a 2 week vacation. . I thought the world was like that, and always would be, but then the milk carton kids came along and that was the end of that. Seems like the world was more instep with decency then. Honesty and watching out for your neighbors was around us, not just mentioned or seen in movies. It seemed almost everyone went to church on Sunday. I think that has allot to do with it. I remember a friend of mine who was in the Army talking about how they drilled marching to the beat of a big drum. They practiced marching instep to the big drum for the big graduation ceremony. He said, when it came time for this massive display of marching, his platoon was stationed at the far end of the field, and because of the distance of the drum, by they time they heard the boom they were way out of step with the others. He said they were totally out of sync and it was awful to see. It is kind of like that with God. When you are close by , its easier to march in step, and when you are far away, at best , youre hearing an echo and no longer in step. It is evident to me, that we as a people have made choices to be at the far end of the field more than we should. Im grateful for being able to grow up in softer times, people had more tolerance for each other. Im glad I got to spend time in a world like that, doesnt make the world we have now easier , but gives me an idea of what heaven should be like.
