So heres the thing...in less than two weeks apart there have been shootings within 2 blocks of the school I teach in, both leading to lockdowns. The first shooting resulted in one of the 3 victims dying, one of which was the uncle of one of my students. When I tell people this they immediately say,Oh you need to get out of that neighborhood and teach closer to your house, I know its all said out if pure love for me and my overall safety. But, the fact is I WANT to be in this neighborhood teaching my students and showing them that they can improve their living environment and circumstances with a solid education and the desire to be a leader and make good choices despite any other external factors. So...to those who say you need to get out of Philly and teach closer to home...I am at HOME where I currently teach and wouldnt want to be anywhere else. These kids deserve better and people who wont turn a blind eye to the horrors that surround them, but acknowledge them and push them harder so they can be successful...whether its in their neighborhood or in the burbs. #rantover
