So in a friendly discussion yesterday the Common Core came up. I have to say that I think in general people dont fully understand what the Common Core Standards are. In part because of the lack of information given to the parents. The Common Core is a set of standard objectives that all but 2 states have adopted to make sure that children across the United States receive the same quality education. They are a list of things children should know before they leave their grade. There isnt a specific textbook that is the common core. In this case we were discussing the math series that is being used in the Elementary schools. That series is not the common core, it is just a textbook chosen by Collingswood to implement. A good teacher can teach their students to those academic levels without a textbook. So if ten steps to solve a problem bothers you, then its the text book that we need to change. The standards, good teachers were already teaching!
