So, in my efforts to lower my cholesterol, Ive been making some small diet changes. Pre holidays, I had already lost 8-10 pounds just with these. Of course, it wont work for everyone, and my main focus is lowering my cholesterol, not just my weight. 1. Switching to lower fat versions of basically everything. Skim milk, margarine, lite and fat free dressings and sauces, and fat free snacks. 2. No dairy products that arent fat free. This means no cheese, yogurt, sour cream, etc. Stinks, but most dairy is high in saturated fat and cholesterol. 3. Switching to higher fiber versions of whatever I can. Ive upgraded our pasta to tge Barilla Plus brand. A little bit more money, but one serving packs 7g of fiber and 17g of protein. Bam! Also whole grain breads, cereals, etc. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that tortillas are very low fat, even the regular ones. They have become a staple. 4. Lean meats run the house, so minimal accounts of pork (yes, that means bacon and sausage) and other fatty meats. Except fish, I can eat basically as much fish as I want! 5. More veggies! 6. Less baked goods ... 7. Ready for this one? Metamucil! I know, I know, its that stuff your grandma drank when you were a kid, but it tastes pretty decent, and is a quick easy way to add some fiber. They sell snack bars now, too! And there you have it. Most of the changes have been easy, like just switching brands, and the rest I just remind myself what is at stake!
