So its official...Sarah J and I have booked our tickets to the West Coast Classic Kettlebell competition in California. Feb 7th. Its go time now! Sarah and I wanted to document our Road to San Fran, but mainly weve been recording ourselves to check our technique. (If you havent done so, Id recommend it...more than just looking in the mirror you can really analyze everything thats going on.) Anyway, Ive been dealing with a shoulder issue on and off Id say since summer but probably has been for longer. Nothing serious, Ive definitely caught it in time, but to be safe Ive changed the event Im competing in from the biathlon (10 min jerk then 10 min snatch an hour later) to the long cycle (10 min clean and jerk.) Although my ego initially fought this (and still is), the trainer and realist in me know that this is the best choice for the long term health of my shoulder...I want to train for life, not just to compete. The truth is, sometimes we need to alter our goals to meet the reality of our situation. Sure aim high, but be sure you are making smart decisions. You only have one body. Its hard sometimes to step outside of ourselves and take that objective view. It doesnt mean you have to give up on your goals entirely. Have your sights on a marathon? What happens when youve been training hard, telling everyone around you about it, and your physio advises you to take some time off before the race or even to forgo the race entirely because of an injury? Do you do it? Or do you decide to look for another race further down the road and focus on your rehab exercises until youre ready to go? Ultimately that is your decision. For now Im finally getting excited about the long cycle. Still have a lot of work to do on my fing clean, but its getting there. Cant I just jerk it? I know the snatch will be there when Im ready. I cant rush it. #trusttheprocess #kettlebellsport
