So last night was the first night of Chanukah, and we lit the candles and had our little gift exchange. `Twas Sharon & me, Seth and Vardina and Susie. Now with Vardina in the family, the gift exchange has gotten a little more extensive. When I was a kid, my folks used to give my brother and I each a silver dollar under our dinner plates and a plastic game toy. But that, as they say, is history. Ill hit the highlight gifts last. Usual stuff was given; jewelry, clothes, electronic goodies, books. I got a little artwork for myself, and Sharon got some for herself, too. Susie gave me a certificate to Barry King, and his latest color catalogue, a la Wayne Jueschke. But the two gifts that REALLY stand out to me are: 1) from Susie to me, and this costs at least $7000+++ depending upon where you get yours, a 25 1/2, official logo, shellacked wood or bamboo, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center combination shoe horn/back scratcher. What a honey! When Susie and I went together to her pre-knee surgery seminar, which was for both knee and hip replacement patients, one thing they passed out to all the patients was a goodie bag with anti-germ soaps and lotions, other stuff, and this extra-long back scratcher. When I saw that goodie bag I was scheming, uh, planning to get one for myself. No could do: they had but one each for each patient. Not assistants, spouses, caregivers, etc. Nope, patients alone. I was crestfallen. But here Susie either sacrificed her own or wangled it somehow and got me one. Either way, I received one. And depending upon the facility, physician, medical coverage, etc., this could cost seven grand for starters and who knows what for high-end people (think Kardashians, or Alec Baldwin). Is that a gift, or what?!??? The second knock-your-socks-off gift was from Seth to Vardina. I tell ya, the boy is a true chip-off-the-ol-block from his dad. He knows how to pick gifts for a woman! Altho not inscribed he gave her the limited volume Migraine: Manifestations, Pathogenesis and Management, Second Edition, Contemporary Neurology Series. How many women get THAT from their loving man, I ask you?? I tell you, gift-giving is a gift. He gets it from me. Must be genetic.
