So last night while I was enjoying some cheese and a cold beer, playing guitar, working out a new song, there comes a peeping and rustling behind me at the wood stove. There behind the glass are two chimney swifts looking out at me. I keep the top of my chimney open evey spring so Ill get these amazing visitors. they set up houiskeeping in my chimney and raise their babies. it;s more than a decade of them. sure its a mess, and i have to clean the chimney after, but live and let leive I say. beside, they have come to be friends of a sort, whoim I eagerly await at the break of every winter. Three years ago, someone close and I even rescued a chick that had fallen down the chimney to the stove. we drove over Hells creation on a Sunday to get that little spark of life a chance at a wildlife rescue:-) Good times that. Well, back to my two new challenges. What to do?. Fling open the door and have swifts coursing theough the house in the dark? Nah thats not gonna do. Wait til dawn and they will fly back up? Nah, baffel in the way they wont see the light. so I got a mesh laundry bag and sloooooowly opend the stove door. I managed to get my hand an bag around the first one. What an amazing experient. it instantly wet calm. Looked at me, little heart racing like an out of control pocket watch. I walked outside in the dart opened my hand and whirrrrrrr of it flew into the night. The other was so calm when i opened went back in for it that I thought it might be injured. Carefully I looked it over for signs of trauma. Oh my gosh what a beautiful little bird. We see them fly in those amazing aerial displays, but who knew how amain close up. su streamlines, every feather lying just so. Little eyes staring back at me. and in the dark whirrrr off again into the night. Peace....
