So many good ideas, so little power. The American political system - TopicsExpress

So many good ideas, so little power. The American political system has passed a tipping point. I dont fully believe that we can ever re-balance our money-metastasized democracy, whether its in the interest of the poor, or to save the planet. Shiller, here, has sensible ideas to restore a modicum of economic equality, but isnt this missing the point that theres no political might behind those ideas? The founding fathers were smart to break the government into a self-balancing tripod, but they could not have imagined the pith-pin effect of infinite corporate money overwhelming every element of electing a government, including the all-important will of the people. Nor could it have imagined the seemingly democratizing ubiquity of the Internet inadvertently taking the legs out from under the fourth leg of an accountable, credible independent press. Professional journalism, where reporters worked hard to get a story, and editors earned their keep by making sure the reporters werent just making this shit up, has been replaced by the meaningless white noise of anybody and everyone, including me, saying whatever they want to; most news, is nothing more than barely substantiated opinion. Does the average American know whats worth caring about? Of course he does: Jesus-American Idol. Now that the internet has effectively killed journalism as a viable profession, replacing it with an unfettered tyranny of the masses, the same corporations that are buying our politics by the shit-ton are free to vapor-gas the dopamine-and-sugar-addicted, reality-phobic masses with whatever bubblegum-scented mind control opiates suit corporate profit making. Is there anything left to lose? Obama is still president, but only because its cheaper for the Koch brothers to poison the well for two more years than to pay for a military coup. Obamas presidency, bless his dark-skinned Islamic heart, is the epitome of the powerlessness of politics against massive money. You can bet that by 2016, bottomless tar sands of cash will have so thoroughly smeared Hillary, and everyone in her draft, that the turnout for her tar-and-feathered rail ride out of town will be even smaller than the pathetic 30 percent that showed up to mark its lesser-of-two-evils ballots this last time around. Doesnt make any difference who gets the job - HIS blood will be solid green under the skin. Its a perfect storm in of greed. As resistance melts, the poor dont have a clue why theyre underwater and dont even try to swim, and so go the ice caps. The rich, meanwhile, ride a little higher in their yachts.
