So many leaders helped us when the 35W Bridge collapsed but no one did more than Cong. Jim Oberstar to try to prevent it from happening again. He called from the floor the night it happened and told he he was already working on a national bill to improve bridge safety. One month later, after the news coverage calmed down, he had many of us come to DC to testify for his hearing…but most of the rest of Congress had moved on and it died. He didnt give up and continued to fight, for years. Next time a disaster happens and someone asks: Why cant leaders try harder to prevent this tell them Jim Oberstar did, way past when it was popular.
