So much is being said about the Gujarat model and its touted that the model itself and its leader alone could save India. On other end its detractors have put all their energy and brought in all the statistics like growth and human development indicators to prove them wrong. I don’t know how much is enough to prove the Gujarat model isn’t rosy as painted and it never cared for its most vulnerable and let the subhuman working conditions continue. For instance thousands of slat pan workers in Kutch, due to prolonged exposure to slat their skin degenerates, slowly eaten away and rots. Alang port must be the most hazardous place to work on earth. Its where ships world over are decommissioned. Many suffer from respiratory and other health issues, loose limbs, get injured even succumb. Developed and even not so developed parts of world have given up this dirty business of ship wrecking which causes severe environmental damage. Where does all the nationalism go when our country becomes a dumpyard for developed world’s waste. Why things go unregulated and without impunity here in Gujarat. Are these things acceptable and wonder how someone could keep continue boasting about achievements ( real and unreal) while some of its people are working in terrible conditions. Media would have done well if it had covered the plight of slat pan workers when Arvind Kejriwal met them in his Gujarat visit, than covering smashed windshield of his car. Heartening to see Rahul Gandhi paying them visit and BJP attempting to woe the workers.
