So, my main semester nursing textbook dedicates a whole chapter to the physiology of stress and techniques of stress reduction, including relaxation breathing, meditation, imagery, music, and massage (oh yeah!). On meditation: In people who meditate regularly, the brain is reoriented from a stressful fight-or-flight mode to one of acceptance, a shift that increases contentment. Long-term meditation practices create structural differences in the lower brain-stem, which could account for some of the (positive) cardiovascular, cognitive, emotional, and immunoreactive changes. Meditation has many positive health benefits, including reversal of coronary artery disease, decreased levels of cortisol (stress hormone), decreased cholesterol levels, increased airflow to lungs, and increased immune functions (Medical Surgical Nursing by Lewis).
