So, of course Im disappointed, but mostly Im filled with gratitude. I am so grateful for the support of my dear friends in Vancouver, all over Canada, and all around the world, who stepped up with encouragement, your wallets, your time, your ideas and your love. I am one lucky man to have you all in my life. I dont think Ive ever worked so hard on anything in my life, so the let down is definitely going to be a grieving process; however, Im heartened by a few things, that I would like to share with you. These are victories that you can all share in with me. Despite the results, my friends, this is a win: - We helped shape the conversation of what public education can look like, how it can be more, how diversity is a strength and how being green can be a way forward. Ive had conversations with those that have been elected and I trust Janet Fraser (the Green who won!), along with a few others, will be strong allies and who will carry our ideas and strategies forward - Ive made 48,539 new friends in Vancouver. I needed to make about 10,000 more to get in, but man, thats a lot of support out there. I feel your love, thank you! - My fellow candidate from the queer community, Jane Bouey , and I were both way ahead of the infamous homophobic/transphobic hate duo -- this sends a very strong message, that Vancouver is an inclusive city and that trying to push people out and fear mongering will not be tolerated. This is the most important victory of this all, the reason I entered the race, and in this I am celebrating the most. I am so grateful for this experience, Im tearing up writing this, because in all sincerity, I care so much about our future and I would like to help foster a progressive community that I know is possible - Ill have to look for my next way to help make that dream a reality, but first, Im going for a long run, going to sleep in, catch up with my partner, my new nephew and loved ones...and take a little time for me. I remain hopeful and heartened by the beautiful connections I made over the last few months. My friends, there are so many incredible people in our community. Thank you for supporting me, I look forward to supporting you. With love, gratitude and so much respect, yours truly, Mischa Oak
