So on a recent pilgrimage to the Southland I finally had an opportunity to sprawl out on the couch and watch 12 Years a Slave. At the end of the movie I couldnt see what all the hype was about. A true story, well told. That was it for me. I was left wondering what exactly Lupita got the Oscar for. Now dont get me wrong. Im happy for her as a jet black woman from Kenya making a big break in Hollywood, and I hope she moves from strength to strength, but I still dont know what exactly she got the Oscar for. As for all these Hollywood people sweating like hungry pothounds over Lupita like if shes the last black woman on earth - I am so glad I didnt buy into that hype. I am quite accustomed to seeing beautiful black women. I was born of and raised by one, and Ive been seeing them my whole life. I love them, I praise them all the time, and I uplift ALL of them - in the infinite variety of skin shades, hair types, and body sizes in which they come, even though like everybody else I have my own personal preferences. I photograph them too!! LOL.... So my fellow black people, please be careful. Lupita Nyongo IS beautiful, no doubt about that - but so is your sister, your aunt, your mom, your wife, your girlfriend, the woman walking down the street, your grannie, your neighbour, your friend, the lady you buy cucumbers from in the market, etc, etc, etc. Dont be fooled when Hollywood selects ONE black woman and casts her as the most beautiful thing on earth while still in ways obvious and not so obvious perpetuating a system where the white girl is still held up as the standard of beauty to be aspired to. Dont wait on Hollywood to tell you who is beautiful. Beautiful women are all around us. Beautiful black women are all around us. Let us honour them, let us respect them. Let us love them - ALL THE TIME!!
