So on this day in 1944, U.S. General Douglass MacArthur landed on the beaches of Leyte islands in the Philippines. In 1941, he was ordered by president Roosevelt to personally abandon the islands as they were being attacked by Japanese forces. Before he left he told the people that he will return. Thousands of American & Filipino soldiers were forced to surrender the islands. Those who surrendered were then forced on a thousand-mile death march that would become known as the Bataan Death March, where over an estimated 2,000 either died or were killed along the way. Along with China, the Philippines suffered the blunt force of the Imperial Army and Navy. This video is a clip from the WWII in HD series by History Channel youtu.be/Wv1PF0tAE1s
