So one of the most disheartening things I encounter is the sentiment shared by so many artists (whose work I dearly love and am influenced by) that is tolerant of the atrocities being committed by our government. For example, take this statement by Ben Templesmith: drone strikes are far better than invading countries & causing a million deaths. Id actually pay a special tax meant to pay for drone strikes on people who think throwing acid in womens faces, beating, raping them, stoning people & all sorts of lovely things. Dont mind at all. Besides the fact that it is embracing a different form of murder as a normal behavior, it is teetering on racism and prejudice in that it groups all victims of drone strikes as engaging in the deplorable behavior he is describing. The fact is that countless studies, like the one I am linking to, are showing that civilians (including innocent women and children) are suffering gruesome deaths at the hands of these ineffective strikes. This is not an attack on Ben Templesmith as I think ultimately he is a good person. The big point is that artists are the ones who have throughout history taken risks on behalf of the people who dont have a voice. They have been the ones who have helped steer the consciousness of the masses. It seems like this has gone away. If you notice those who are risking there own name to advocate for you and your rights, support them.
