So, our old veterinarian (who moved to Arizona) Dr. Merker, told us to pick 3 things that Zoey loves to do, and when she cant do 2 of them, then it is probably time to let her go. Zoey is almost 11 years old. She barely eats. She can no longer go on walks. She cant jump up on furniture, or off it. She has a hard time moving around and is on $130 worth of medicine each month just to stay somewhat comfortable. Last week, Deidre was sitting against Zoey and pushed too hard on Zoeys hips, and Zoey bit her...on the eye. It broke the skin and nearly gave me a heart attack. That was the determining factor. After many many many tears, James and I called it. Were putting her down. Went today to talk about our options with Dr. Merkers replacement, a twenty-something little young thing who has no children of her own, but who has dogs. Lots of dogs. How do I know she has no children and lots of dogs? I asked her, after she said to me, Sounds like the problem isnt your dog. Sounds like the problem is your children. And then she prescribed us $250 worth of medicine each month, and refused to give me an appointment for euthanasia. When I said, We cant really afford that much medication for her right now, she said to me, Well I can only tell you what I think. I cant tell you what you want to hear. And she walked out of the room. So the moral of the story is (and this comes from a girl who *loves* her dogs something fierce): I think fulfilling ones maternal instincts via pets does something to dehumanize a woman. And if you need a veterinarian, I would wholeheartedly *not* recommend Marisda Rosa at Sunridge Animal Hospital.
