So, perhaps this is common knowledge, but during my lunch break I just researched this to solidify it in my mind. Ive known these words but didnt realize there was an ordering of knowledge to them. There are stages in scientific knowledge: Observation - something you see, but may or may not have a firm understanding of. Hypothesis - A proposed solution to explain these observations, that can be scientifically tested but has not yet. Theory - A hypothesis or set of hypotheses that has yet to be disproven, but has found correlated evidence to heavily support it. Therefore it is based on fact and holds more rigor than hypothesis or speculation on its own. (So apparently mixing hypothesis with theory is incorrect, and theories are heavily fact based, but dont want to miscontrue themselves as gospel truths, as they could find one piece of evidence to disprove it entirely.)
