So pleased. I just got nearly 1,600 words written in FLIGHT. The process of writing stories longer than, say, 13K is always different, and I learn new things each time. Novellas are about finding that balance between dynamic story/plot concision and adding the nuances that let the tale have the characterization and depth of an almost-novel. A novel offers you more opportunities -- in fact requires that you make them -- to tell backstory and give characters depth, but it is trickier to do that and maintain dynamic plot movement. At the same time, a dynamic plot has to be more than just a series of adventures without mysteries being revealed and offering more, because on their own, events, as exciting as they can be, can also become tedious and draw things out. So far, the novel is at 57,400. Got about another 15K to go.
