So proud of my brother Bens submitted letter to the editor. I hope its in the paper tomorrow morning!! I am dismayed at the Senate Finance Committee’s version of the education bill. A close read reveals that it only allows for a one time funding increase of $200 per student, as opposed to the requested increase of $400 to the BSA in the first year, and then $125 in each of the next two years. It is an insult to the schoolchildren of this state to say that they cant come up with something better. Legislators work for us, and they need to do better. I dont want my children to be at a disadvantage because of the shortsighted, penny-ante politicking that is passing for statesmanship in Alaska. Graduation rates have been on the rise in this state, and this trend will not continue if teachers lose their jobs and more and more students are crowded into classrooms. If legislators do not increase the BSA to the levels that are being requested by parents and citizens all over Alaska, it will be on their watch that the education of Alaskan students takes a hit.
