So sad, Gut wrenching really... I Cant imagine this in our modern world, but it is in our face now... We have to speak out and support humanist groups and neutral governments. This isnt new, European history was filled with atrocities heralded by the Catholic Church in the name of Christianity, millions died at the hands of the papacy in war upon war and any and all heretics put to death. It wasnt Christianity, the problem was the people running the Catholic Church, fear, colonialism, and the subsequent instability, arrogance, narcissism that lead many wars in Europe. This was turned around with the reformation. Wars didnt end, but tolerance was overwhelming when humanism became a major voice. Clearly, the intolerance surrounding Islamic groups needs more than guidance and has to cease but the only way to ensure this is that governments must truly become non-secular. Whats next? It wont be pretty, we are in for 25 years, ie a generation of realization... That is, unless it takes many more generations. Our awareness is simply the beginning, it is not the solution nor the end. What must we do? In the simplest of statements, and taken from Thomas Friedman many years ago, Islam needs a Reformation.
