So the Hold Steady is doing a four night stand at the Horseshoe (celebrating the Horseshoes 67th anniversary) this week and my buddy Alec was kind enough to drag me out to see their second show last night. Not surprisingly, they put on a terrific show. I dont if it was because it was their second night in the run, but they played Separation Sunday in its entirety. Alec and I didnt play on that, but we were thrilled as this album was our gateway into the band for both of us. Indeed, it is still my favorite. Theyre still an outstanding live rock band. I sure wish I liked their latest album more. So with DAY 12 upon us (and only two weeks from the personal list deadline), I am cutting another top choice band. It isnt a terrible album by any means and I imagine someone seeking an introduction to the band might be well served with Teeth Dreams. Still though, I find it lacks the pep, vitality, and energy of their earlier work. When I first heard Separation Sunday, I thought to myself - this is ROCK MUSIC. It was the sound of urgency and joy.
