So the big day is almost upon us. Ive remained relatively silent about which way Ive votes in the referendum, and I plan on staying as such. As I havent been in the country for the past 5 months, Ive not been there to witness first hand the protests, marches, and debates that are a sign of a very healthy political environment, and I have to say Im impressed by the feverish way the indyref has taken young voters into politics. Yet, as Ive been out of the forefront- Ive had the opportunity to view both sides of the fence quite impartially, and Im upset to say the least to see such childish mud slinging from BOTH camps. Im also disappointed in the way that most voters seem to have a blinkered view of what should happen, because the minute you refute 100% of what your opponent says, your own argument becomes invalid. Its safe to say Ill be returning to a completely different county to the one I left a few months back, no matter which way the vote swings. I think one thing that wasnt initially taken into consideration enough when this independence row started is how the decision is changing the landscape of the people in the country. Either way, a whole host of people are going to be left disillusioned with a nation that they havent voted to be a part of, and I think its important (honestly, more for yes voters, should it go that way) to remember that. This cannot turn into a pissing contest if your team win. Id urge everyone, especially our young voters, to keep your heart out of the polling stations tomorrow. Vote with your head, and to remember to not hold anothers vote against them. I know which way I want the vote to go, and I know the way in which I think it will, and I hope that one persons synthetic patriotism and ego doesnt damage our nation beyond repair.
