So the buzz word is conservation, especially since a drought has been officially declared. Here are some tips to help: 1. When choosing plants, look for things native to your region. They are the plants, shrubs and trees that graced the landscape long before settlers showed up with other plants and a garden hose. (In our area these may include; Lavender, Yarrow, Coreopsis, Artemisia) 2. Mulch, mulch, mulch! Adding a thick layer of mulch to your garden/landscape will cause the soil to retain water longer, allowing you to water less. It will also act as an insulation keeping soil warmer in the cold season and cooler during the summer. 3. Water lawns more efficiently. Choose a watering time that is NOT the hottest part of the day as much of the valuable resource can be misted off and evaporated into the air. Use the cycle and soak method, watering shorter intervals and allowing time for it to soak in before starting the next cycle. This will eliminate run off and water waste.
