So the course for Poroshenko in Minsk is clear. He should offer Putin nothing, except possibly the opportunity to save face. This could be done through a UN stabilization force in Eastern Ukraine, more autonomy for local oblasts or some combination of other options that Poroshenko has offered in the past. As my friend and former colleague, Vitaly Sych put it, nobody ever asked Ukraine if it wanted to be part of Russia’s “buffer zone.” Now the Ukrainian people have made it clear that they wish to join Poland, the Baltic states and the other Eastern European nations as a full fledged member of European society, just as Putin has made it clear that he will not respect their right to choose for themselves. There is very little common ground and Putin is the one who must be made to concede.
