So...the etiquette of umbrellas. How heavy does the rain have to be before you are not sneered at for up-putting your brolly? You are on a narrow footpath with a brolly and someone with another brolly is coming toward you. Who has to raise or verticalise their brolly? Is the person with the smaller or bigger brolly? Is the person with a really sound world-encompassing brolly or the one with the cheap placky red thingy that will turn inside out any second? Is the person who is shorter and hence whose brolly is lower? You are at a pedestrian crossing waiting for the lights to change with several others crowding behind you. Your brolly is so positioned as to have its drip line directly above the collar of the person in front who is in a mac. Who has right of umbrage? The person in front who is getting an icy dribble down their back, or you that anyone is dumb enough NOT to have a brolly up? And speaking of brolly up, at what point in boarding the train are you supposed to fold the brolly up? Before you get in? What if it is pelting down?
