So, the new Apple iOS 8.0 incorporates something called predictive text, known in assistive technology circles for some time as word prediction. I confess, it looks and feels a little weird on the iPhone and will take some getting used to, but for AAC users, this could be a huge game changer. Schuylers AAC app, PRCs Words for Life, has quietly incorporated word prediction as an option for a while, and it seriously cuts down the time that it takes for Schuyler to produce spoken text. Now that capability will be available in other speech apps, and in all other apps she uses as well. In the world of augmentative communication, time is the enemy. Communication via AAC is unavoidably slower than typical conversation, and for teenage users in particular, that reduced speed can present the biggest impediment to social integration. Word prediction can significantly reduce that delay. Its a big deal. Its worth a little weirdness on my phone, thats for certain.
