So, the subject is CMO (Crainial Mandibulopathy) called Lion Jaw and also called an ancient Highland disease. Affected puppies can only result from breeding a carrier of the gene to a carrier of the gene, or obviously, a carrier to an affected dog. After years of study by Dr Patrick Venta of Michigan State University, the gene was finally isolated in Europe and a genetic test developed, which he administers here in the US. During a routine screening of my breeding stock for CMO, which I am continuing as finances permit (test is 110,) and encouraging others I work with to do the same, along comes a dog distantly related to my line (and of course the other side of the familys line) with carrier status. So - how do you get the test kit? [email protected] will get you to Dr Patrick Venta and he will send you the kit which is simply two cheek swabs and the paperwork. It is not the end of the world; now that we have a test (the good news) Dr. Venta observes that a dog with carrier status may be bred to a dog with Clear status and the resultant puppies also tested. Experienced breeders have probably heard rumors or actual knowledge of certain Cairns who produced affected offspring. It would be excellent practice to follow up on that knowledge with a test of a Cairn used for breeding and with breedable puppies out there.
