So there seems to be a lot of controversy around who, in fact, is responsible for the kidnappings/ murders of three Israeli teenagers in June, which set off a series of events culminating in the war in Gaza. The Israeli government immediately pointed a finger at Hamas, holding Hamas responsible for the kidnappings and claiming that Hamas would pay. The Israeli government has yet to produce any evidence linking the kidnappings directly to the Hamas leadership, even though the funding, it seems, came from them. Some argued that it made little sense for Hamas to order the kidnappings, namely because their participation in a unity-government with Fatah had bestowed upon Hamas unprecedented international legitimacy. It was also clear that the Israeli government was eager to delegitimize the Hamas-Fatah unity government: opponents of a two-state solution in Israel often point out that the Palestinians are politically and geographically divided between Hamas and Fatah, making it impossible to reach a peace agreement with them. Lastly, much information has come to light about the terrorist cell that carried out the kidnappings -- even though they are affiliated with Hamas, it appears that they often act without the consent of, or even in opposition to, the Hamas leadership. Does anybody have any information that I dont about who is responsible? On one hand, it seems to be very important: if the Israeli government blamed Hamas without evidence, using the kidnappings as a pretext to launch a major military assault again Hamas in the WB, then the governments actions were reckless and possibly led to a war with Hamas that neither side wanted. On the other hand, it seems to matter little in terms of the war in Gaza itself: once Hamas began firing rockets into Israel, regardless of the reasons why, they forced Israel to act to defend its citizens and, thus, provoked an Israeli response.
