So, theres some heavy shit going on in Ferguson right now. Im certain I dont have all the information yet, but heres roughly what is going on: * A police officer killed a black teen who may or may not have been trying to grab the officers gun. Until I know what actually happened, my opinion is carefully neutral. * The local community protested this along with the fact that the officers name is being withheld. I am fine with all expressions of the First Amendment. * At some point, the police started cracking down on the protesters. This is obviously not a good thing. Im not certain if it happened before or after the looting started, but even if it started after, cracking down on protesters (as opposed to looters and rioters) is unacceptable. * Of course, looting and rioting isnt cool either. * The city of Ferguson has been turned into a no-fly zone until the 18th. This means that media helicopters cant descend below 3,000 feet. There are also reports that police are arresting/harassing reporters. I have to admit, this doesnt look good for the cops and gives credence to what the protesters are saying. Im inclined towards thinking this is MASSIVE police overreach and overreaction, but that could change with new information. Regardless, America has been turning into a police state for at least a decade.
