So this off leash park in Nova Scotia Canada is looking to ban - TopicsExpress

So this off leash park in Nova Scotia Canada is looking to ban children. I have included the article and my thoughts on off leash parks in general. My comments are first: I think the idea of the off leash dog park needs to be reexamined because while the concept is decent the reality is that the park is really only fun for some dogs and some owners. Case in point, I have two Chihuahuas who are both under 6lbs and a very shy Brussels Griffon who is 12lbs. It simply isnt possible for us to safely play at an off leash park because so many people cant and I mean CANNOT control their medium and large sized dogs. These dogs are an actual menace to other people who might like to spend time at the park but are not willing to risk their toy dog getting trampled. Too many times I have seen owners laugh off not having taught their dog the recall or come command effectively. Dont worry, theyre friendly, Oh my gosh! Theyve never done that before! and Theyre a rescue! are three sentences I hear far too often from totally ineffectual owners with regards to their dogs running amok. If you choose to share your life with a dog then YOU are the individual responsible for making sure that dog does not pose a threat to children, the elderly and other dogs they encounter. Make no mistake, I am fully aware that there are some toy dogs out there whos level of training leaves a lot to be desired and that they problem of untrained dogs is not limited to medium and large breeds only but I have worked very hard to ensure that my dogs are well socialized examples of their breed who are well mannered and polite. I do this as a means to protect them because they do have to live in human culture and being good dogs is the best defense against being misjudged. I would LOVE to be able to take them to a park where they could frolic off leash without having to worry that some large uncontrolled dog is going to come along and break their legs because they are just friendly. huffingtonpost.ca/2014/07/14/children-banned-dog-park_n_5586098.html
