So this past week weve watched quite a few movies, and I just thought Id post my thoughts on them... Not necessarily because anyone particularly cares, but because Im bored and I thought maybe I could help someone pick their next movie... So.... First off we watched a Million Ways to Die in the West... Another Seth McFarlane movie, and he stayed pretty true to his comedic style... I laughed out loud a few different times, while Samantha didnt find it that funny... The plot is pretty predictable, but its supposed to be funny so I dont think anyone will mind... Id recommend it, unless youre hesitant about R-rated language because they drop the F-bomb a little excessively (like every few seconds)... Effectively it comes down to whether or not youre a fan of the Family Guy style of funny... Ill give it a 7.5 out of 10 (for a comedy) Secondly, we watched The Spectacular Now... Starring Shailene Woodley, I had high hopes for this one after I saw a preview at the theater... I felt like the movie had a lot of potential, but a large portion of it seemed to slip through the cracks... The characters did have a depth, and the acting wasnt bad, but the story left a lot of open ends... The ending stayed true to the mentality of the main character (although Samantha almost flipped her lid). My major complaint was that the character development wasnt thoroughly explored... They went through major mental/emotional shifts without really explaining them well, if at all... I was left with a lot of questions at the end that, if answered, would have made this movie a lot more fluid... Still, Id recommend it but would give it maybe a 6.5 out of 10. Despite having solid acting, it wasnt enough to overcome the lack of depth in the script... The third movie was 22 Jump Street... Again, high expectations because the first one was full of awkward comedy that has seemly become the norm for funny movies... The characters were fairly flat, although I didnt expect much given that this was a generic comedy... I felt again like the plot was really predictable and they strained to revive that awkward, sarcastic comedy that made the first one so popular... Strained so much, in fact, that it felt more awkward than funny... The plot had a direction but it wasnt good enough to follow... There was actually a sense that the film was a little confused on what genre it wanted to belong to... There was some sort of love story, some action, some football, some mystery and a splash of funny... Like an out of place freshman, it could have a used a little more time to figure out what it wanted to accomplish and focus more energy in that direction instead of wasting it trying to cover so many bases... Ill push a 6 out of 10 on it... Wouldnt be the first movie to come to mind if someone was in search of a good laugh.... Lastly we watched The Perks of Being a Wallflower... Im not sure where to even start with this movie besides saying that it was magnificently done in every aspect... The script was beautifully written and was complimented by the cast of talented actors and actresses, including Logan Lerman and Emma Watson... The cinematography was something to be admired as well... It always seemed to make the most out of every scene, never missing an opportunity to capitalize on the award worthy cast... The characters seemed to jump right out of the screen by comfortably relating to the viewer as someone you could know... I felt like I could relate to the main character Charlie, and that went a long way in understanding the psychology of him in relation to everyone around him... Set in maybe the 90s, it was a relaxing ride from beginning to end... Watching each character develop and grow and really establish a sense of comradery was a pleasant relief that I havent felt from a film in awhile... Ive wanted to watch this since I saw a preview awhile back, and Im a little disappointed that I waited so long... Maybe Im a little biased because I feel so much relation to the characters that I failed to see any shortcomings (actually the only thing I felt was off, was that certain parts didnt feel like they belonged in a high school setting... Some parts felt more mature, more college like... There was only a couple of parts that came off that way, and it also might have just been me)... Ill gladly give it a 9 out of 10 (although Ill accept a challenge to that as I admitted bias)... If youre looking for a feel good movie thats easy to relate to, the Perks of Being a Wallflower wont disappoint...
