So this year I am in a football pool (dont laugh, I make my picks based on which city I would rather visit - very scientific). As many of you know, I honestly couldnt care less about football. But, from August through February, it is the unofficial first agenda item on pretty much every meeting I sit through, so I figured I should do something fun to make me at least pay attention to who wins and loses. Unless you live under a rock, you know what happened with the NFL this week. When I read this article, and learned that the National Domestic Violence Hotline has seen an 84% increase in phone calls in the two days following the release of the video, I was hopeful that maybe something good could come from this - maybe victims of domestic abuse will realize they are not alone, that it is not ok, and that there is help out there for them. And then I read further, and learned that the hotline does not have enough advocates on staff nor financial resources to handle the influx of calls. They dont have enough money to help the victims looking for a lifeline. And then I started adding it all up. Javier and I both paid $100 to join our football pool. He is in a fantasy league, which I assume he paid to join. I bought Lucie a new Patriots shirt this fall. It goes on. If we can pay this much to participate in football, we can certainly donate some money to help victims of domestic abuse. With statistics like 1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner I am certain you know someone affected by domestic abuse. Even if you dont know about it, someone in your life has been affected by this. So add it up. How much did you pay for your football pool or fantasy league? How much did you pay for a new shirt or jersey this year? How much will you spend on buying tickets to a game? Roughly estimate the value of the time you spend drafting your fantasy league or making your weekly picks. And then consider giving even a percentage of that to an organization that helps domestic abuse victims. Show them that you care just as much about them as you do a game. m.huffpost/us/entry/5798462?ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000046&ir=Women
