So today was my 35th anniversary at The News Journal. I still remember the day I walked into the lobby of the old building at 8th & Orange Streets in Wilmington to file an application in September of 1979. They used to have the police scanner piped into the lobby and on the day I applied for a job one of the courthouse reporters - Phil Milford - took a bullet in the stomach. As his wife Maureen explains it he was checking some court records when a woman walked into the room to file some kind of paper or complaint. Her purse bumped the doorknob and the (loaded) gun inside her purse went off. The bullet went through her purse and into Phil, who radiod the update to the newsroom, believe it or not. He went on to have a great career here, thank God. And I had an interesting introduction to the you-never-know-whats-next life of a reporter. Love this staff - hard-working journalists all of em.
