So tonight I was showing my husband the old pictures I have that my Mama had. In with the picture were two books, written in pencil. One had to do with the railroad, and Im not even sure who it was that worked for the railroad....but the dates are Autumn months of 1921 and Spring of 1922. The other book was more interesting to me, though. It had a date in it...October and November of 1916. Inside was the written record of how many bales of cotton each worker had picked. John was the man I called Grandpa and he was born in 1901. This would have made him barely 16. Along with his name was recorded two of his brothers, Harold and Roy. (I remember them both) It recorded how much cotton was picked by them and other hired hands. The land, I believe, belonged to their father, A.J. Waters. It is a difficult thing for us to imagine a 15 yr old out picking cotton all day....instead of being in school. The dates were October and November...but what shocked me the most, was when I realized the age difference between John and Roy. You see, they both died Dec 8, and 9, of 1991. (neither knew of the others death) and it was the only double funeral I have ever attended. Grandpa, (John) was 90 when he died....Roy, was 81. This meant that Roy, at 6 yrs old, was out in the field picking cotton. Hard for me to imagine....
