So tonight one of my instructors turns up for training. Upset that shed just had a parent berate her in front of the whole class, because his son got a dig during kumite. You said he wouldnt have to do kumite! A complete nonsense, but she kept composed, professional and replied that to progress (to 6th kyu!) he was going to have start sparring sooner or later, at which point, he turned around and walked out with son in toe. Its like asking a swimming instructor to teach your child to swim....but dont get him wet! He doesnt like to get wet. If youre a teacher, of anything; sport, art, literature, giving your time (paid or unpaid), genuinely doing your level best to impart/share your knowledge/passion, and that knowledge, commitment and time is not respected or valued, cut the relationship lose immediately. Its better for everyone concerned. As a professional instructor, I welcome one and all to my dojo. They all start as valued customers. Whether or not they become my student is entirely up to them. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. BTW, The same is true in reverse!
